In a nutshell: GoPro has introduced two new action cameras including the flagship Hero 13 Black and the pint-sized Hero, the company’s smallest ever Hero-line camera with a screen. The GoPro Hero 13 Black adds a handful of new features to an already mature platform. New for 2024 is a redesigned battery that delivers 10 percent more capacity, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity that can result in up to 40 percent faster transfers, and a magnetic latch that makes swapping between mounts easier.
Not a whole lot has changed spec-wise, but you do now get HLG HDR (Hybrid Log Gamma High Dynamic Range) and 10-bit video. There are also additional audio tuning options, an in-camera noise reduction system, and a new burst slo-mo mode that can record up to 400 frames per second at 720p quality, 360 fps at 900p, or 120 frames a second at 5.3K.
GoPro’s latest is also compatible with a new set of HB-series lenses including a macro lens, an ultra-wide lens, and an anamorphic lens. You’ll pay extra for each additional lens, as well as for the four-pack of ND filters, but at least the option exists to give footage a different look.
The new Hero, meanwhile, is billed as GoPro’s smallest, lightest, and easiest to use 4K camera with a screen. Waterproof to a depth of 16 feet, the new Hero weighs just 86 grams and has 35 percent less volume and 46 percent less mass than the flagship Hero 13 Black.
According to GoPro, the new Hero can record continuously for up to 100 minutes at its highest quality setting on a single charge, or closer to 155 minutes when bumping the quality down to 1080p.
Both new cameras are available to pre-order from today. Pricing starts at $399.99 for the Hero 13 Black and $199.99 for the smaller Hero, and scales up should you opt for one of several preconfigured bundles.
The flagship launches globally on September 10, and will be followed by the standard Hero on September 22. The new lenses drop on September 10 as well, with the exception of the anamorphic lens mod which isn’t arriving until sometime in 2025.
